about us
The Barbados Association of Texas (BAT), formerly named the Barbados Association of Greater Houston, was founded in 1992. Our organization is committed to excellence in
education and continued cultural exchange within the Southwest Region of the United States. We are an all-volunteer entity and have no paid staff. We are active in several community organizations, and our members donate many hours of volunteer service assisting the hungry, elderly, disadvantaged, and youth in our area. Our goal is to help affect positive change in our local communities, in addition to our Island home. We are active in charitable fundraising events, disaster relief initiatives, community awareness campaigns, festivals, parades and other cultural activities. We donate our funds to various non-profit charities in Texas. To date we have awarded over $100,000 in scholarship grants to deserving students for furthering their education. Annually, we put together a calendar of events which help to fund our mission’s objectives. Such events include the Taste of Barbados, the Caribbean Expo, Barbados Brunch, and other assorted activities which eventually culminate with our annual Scholarship awards and celebration of Barbados’ Independence. |
BAT membership is comprised of mostly first generation Barbadians and others by descent; however, we are open to anyone, as we seek a diverse cultural membership.
BAT offers numerous opportunities for our members to promote their interests by way of participation in meetings, activities planning, research, professional development workshops, and collaborative projects that include networking and interacting with community organizers and government entities. Through membership, one is able to gain a sense of community, and lifelong friendships are forged. |
